Day 12
Jessica writing today. Happy Thursday (and my last blog writing day!)
We all slept in a little today, waking up around 6:45am. Adam made a delicious breakfast using the farm fresh ingredients we received yesterday, scrambled eggs, bread, and cheese. Both boys loved the bread and had seconds. The only thing on our agenda today was exploring around our chata (cabin) and taking a tour of the farm nearby. Around 8:30, we all got dressed and went outside to go for a walk. It was brisk, especially when the clouds and wind rolled in, but we enjoyed our walk. Luke even found some "bungleweeds" (a made up plant from one of his favorite TV shows - Dino Ranch).
Because we had plans to cook dinner in tonight, we drove to town to have lunch and stop at a grocery store. And if there was one lesson we learned today, it was DON'T trust google maps. The roads they had us going on were matted down grass/gravel pathways at best. At one point, Adam got out of the car to run ahead and check to see if the "road" was going to connect us to the highway. He came back and said that it appeared to. What he did not realize was that they ground was very soft and muddy and we were sliding down a hill at one point. Thankfully we made it to the bottom, only to discover the entrance to the highway was blocked off. We couldn't backtrack up the muddy hill, so we took another "road", hoping it would lead us somewhere productive. With a little luck, it at least took us back to where we came from. What was supposed to be a 20 min drive to the store, turned into an hour excursion in the woods. Ryan slept the whole time and Luke was watching his tablet.
The lunch spot was in a pretty remote area. The menu was not in English, and the waitress didn't speak any either. We went with the special of the day, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It came with a cabbage soup, followed by chicken and pork in a mushroom sauce over rice, french fries, and purple cabbage salad. Adam and I devoured it. Ryan enjoyed it as well. Luke only drank his orange juice. Oh well.
We left the lunch spot to stop at the grocery store. Adam had picked up some ribeye steaks from a local organic farm, so we were looking for some sides to go with it. We accidentally trusted google maps again, and before we knew it, it wanted us to turn down another grassy, gravel road. We immediately turned around, and tried to find another way. Thankfully we were able to back track to the road we originally came in on, and arrived safely back at the Airbnb to unload and relax for a few.
The relaxation didn't last too long, because we had to head back out for the 2pm farm tour. We had hyped Luke up all day, and he was so excited to see the animals. Unfortunately, once we got there, he was not able to wait any longer, and had an epic meltdown. Adam took Ryan on the tour, and I hung back with Luke. There was a small playground and some animals that he could see, so we explored on our own. He had fun watching the chickens, ducks, turkeys, and baby cows. We even got to watch them get fed. The tour was over an hour long, so Luke and I headed to the car to wait for Adam and Ryan. As luck would have it, there were some sheep hanging out near the car. Overall, I think he had a blast. When Adam returned, he told us all about the tour. He said it was a good thing we hung back, because the tour was mostly about cows, was not in English, and it was almost 25 minutes before they even saw an animal. Though, Ryan enjoyed the tour so much, that he even started saying cow! (Sounds like cah).
We made it back home and tried to relax again, but it was getting to be dinner time. Adam was hoping to grill up some steaks and veggies, but the barbecue was not cooperating. He quickly pivoted, and cooked the steaks in a pan and the veggies in the oven. Everything was delicious, and we even have leftovers for breakfast tomorrow. Both boys are currently sleeping, and we are packing up for a somewhat early departure. We are heading to Zdiar for some fun treetop walk and play!
